So it's Thursday, we're in Moab, the only concrete destination we really had, and we decided to roll north to find some dirt to ride. We parked at a trailhead and proceeded to make a quick hot lunch before biking. The visibility was unlimited and we could see a large thunderhead off in the very far distance. Greg broke out his stash of food so we could make two bowls of microwavable mac 'n' cheese. You see, I brought a bin of dry food and Greg brought one. We're sharing everything, but it just so happened that we ended up with two segreghated bins of food. Knowing Greg I figured his was full of granola bars and fruit leather, and for the most part I was right. But he also brought oatmeal and other hot foods from his pantry.
So anyway we boil some water on his camp stove and proceed to make these bowls of easymac. When I pour in the cheese powder it comes out in clumps and doesn't mix. I check the expiration date: Sept 2007. I ask Greg, "WTF?"
He says, "Easymac has an expiration date?"
I vomit in my mouth, but choke it back down. I'm in Moab after all.
So I chuck it and move on to some instant chicken noodle soup, also from his bin. It's brown. And not mixing properly. I ask him how long he's had it.
"I don't know."
I chuck that and eat cold food.
Luckily this exchange took long enough that the thunderhead had moved much closer much faster than we thought, and we packed up. Before we can make it to the maion road, hail unloads on us for 15 straight minutes. Unbelievable.
We salvage the day by touring Arches National Park, and some quick dayhiking after the storm passes. Tomorrow weather looks much better, and we are biking for sure.
Way to go greg, you guys should have taken a fat guy on the trip with you cause at least you would have plenty of food. Believe me, there is nothing expired in my pantry let alone 4 year old easymac! LMao!
